If you have a certain healthy skepticism where the possibility of a Neuromancer adaptation is concerned, you have my understanding and sympathies. But this one is really, like, really actually happening—as the continually expanding cast shows. Last year, Apple TV+ cast Callum Turner (Green Room) as protagonist Case, and Brianna Middleton (Sharper) as the iconic Molly Millions, the story’s two leads.
But there’s more—so much more. Last week, Deadline reported that Max Irons (Condor, pictured above), André De Shields (Hadestown), and Marc Menchaca (Ozark) have joined the cyber-corporate-heist-and-stuff tale. Irons is playing wealthy scion Jean Tessier-Ashpool; De Shields is importer Julius Deane; and Menchaca is the hacker Dixie Flatline.
They join an intriguing cast that already included Dane DeHaan (Lawless) as Peter Riviera, a notably not-nice guy; Mark Strong (Dune: Prophecy) as Armitage, Molly and Case’s employer; and Joseph Lee (Star Trek: Picard) as Hideo, a bodyguard. Cleménce Poésy (In Bruges) is Marie-France Tessier, a very wealthy corporate leader, and Peter Sarsgaard (The Batman) is John Ashpool, who is much of the same; together they control Tessier-Ashpool SA, a company very relevant to the story. Emma Laird (Mayor of Kingstown) is also in the show, though it is not clear who she is playing.
William Gibson’s award-winning Neuromancer is, of course, one of the absolute classics of cyberpunk. Though the novel is 40 years old, it has not gotten a film or TV adaptation—until now. Gibson’s much more recent The Peripheral got adapted first, though it sadly only lasted a season at Prime Video. The Neuromancer series is created by Graham Roland (Dark Winds) and JD Dillard (Devotion).
This seems to be really happening. We will be waiting with bated breath for a real first look.
